The312Report Training Camp Notebook: Caleb Williams Is On A Mission...And The Rest Of The NFL Better Start Stretching
Happy August, family.
Football is officially back, the pads are about to start popping, and after one week of Bears training camp...I have just one question:
Is it September yet?!
Because if what we're hearing out of Halas Hall is even remotely sustainable, this offense isn't just going to be good...
It's going to be an absolute problem.
Caleb Williams Is Looking Like A Man Possessed

Listen...we all expected Caleb Williams to take a leap in Year 3.
I don't think anybody expected him to look like this.
After spending the offseason putting in work with his receivers, Caleb has hit training camp looking every bit like a quarterback who has heard all of the off-season praise and is ready to firmly entrench his name in the top 3-4 quarterbacks in the NFL.
The throws? Ridiculous.
The maturation, leadership and command? Noticeable.
The confidence? Through the roof.
Coaches are raving. Teammates are buying in. Fans can't stop talking about him. Media members are walking off the practice field looking like they just witnessed something illegal.
And then there's the body transformation.
Caleb reportedly showed up to camp weighing somewhere between 210-215 pounds, shedding roughly 10-15 pounds from last season with one goal in mind: become faster, more agile, and smoother moving around the pocket.
Mission accomplished.
He looks lighter on his feet. More explosive escaping pressure. More decisive when taking off.
In other words...
The boy is locked in.
And the rest of the league should be very...VERY...afraid.
Luther Burden Might Be The NFL's Next "Oh Sh*t" Moment

Now here's where things get scary.
Because Caleb can be Superman all he wants, but even Superman needs somebody to throw the ball to.
Thankfully...
The receiving room apparently chose violence this summer.
Let's start with Luther Burden.
Coming into his second training camp, expectations were already sky high.
Apparently they weren't high enough.
Everyone covering camp keeps saying the exact same thing: the game has slowed down for him.
His route running looks polished.
The separation is effortless.
The burst is ridiculous.
The confidence is obvious.
Caleb Williams has praised him.
The coaching staff loves where he's headed.
And with the changes throughout the roster, Burden isn't just competing for touches anymore...
He's becoming one of the featured weapons in Ben Johnson's offense.
If you've been sleeping on Luther Burden...
I'd recommend setting about six alarms.
Rome Odunze Heard The Noise...

...and decided to answer it the only way that matters.
On the field.
I'll be the first one to admit itβI raised an eyebrow after hearing some of the comments surrounding his foot injury.
Apparently...
Rome took that personally.
Reports from Halas Hall say he's looked as explosive as ever, consistently hauling in difficult catches while showing zero signs of being limited.
Whatever concerns existed a week ago?
Yeah...
Throw 'em in Lake Michigan.
Rome looks healthy.
Rome looks confident.
Rome looks ready.
Oh...And There's More

As if Caleb...
Burden...
and Rome weren't enough...
Rookie Zayvion Thomas keeps flashing every time his number gets called.
Word around camp is Ben Johnson is absolutely loving what he's seeing from the rookie, and Thomas is making it increasingly difficult for this coaching staff to justify keeping him off the field.
Meanwhile, veteran free-agent addition Khalif Raymond has chipped in several highlight-worthy plays of his own.
Honestly...
I don't even have some earth-shattering update about the tight ends.
And somehow...
That might be the craziest part.
Because when your biggest offensive takeaway is basically...
"Yeah...we haven't even talked about the tight ends yet..."
...you know you've assembled an embarrassment of riches.
Weapon after weapon.
Playmaker after playmaker.
As Bears fans...
We've waited a long damn time to be able to say that.
Quick Hits
A couple other nuggets worth mentioning...
Second-year running back Kyle Monangai has been sidelined with an undisclosed injury after participating only on Day 1 of training camp.
Hopefully it's nothing serious.
Hopefully.
But...
Juuuuuuuuust in case...
Since every national media personality insists we're somehow shopping for another running back anyway...
I'll casually throw this out there...
What would it take?
A Day 3 pick?
Maybe...
Just maybe...
To pry Alvin Kamara away from New Orleans?
π
I'm just asking questions.
Remember...
You heard it here first.
Then Came The Gut Punch...

Just when camp was giving everybody reasons to smile...
Football reminded us how cruel it can be.
Safety Coby Bryant suffered what appeared to be a serious left leg injury during one-on-one drills against Cole Kmet.
According to CHGO Bears' Adam Hoge, Bryant immediately grabbed at his left knee/leg after landing awkwardly and was visibly emotional as he climbed onto a cart under his own power.
Let's be clear...
Being carted off from the far practice fields isn't automatically alarming.
Seeing a player that emotional?
That's the part that's hard to ignore.
I'm not going to play doctor.
I'm not going to speculate.
I'm not going to assume the absolute worst.
But...
I'll also say this...
It doesn't exactly look encouraging.
And if the injury is as serious as many fear, it'd be an absolutely brutal blow for one of Chicago's biggest offseason additions before the season even begins.
Final Thoughts
One week into training camp and one thing has become crystal clear.
This offense is every bit as explosive as we hoped it'd be.
Caleb Williams looks like a franchise quarterback who's ready to announce himself to the football world.
His receivers are making life easier instead of harder.
Ben Johnson has toys everywhere.
The vibes around Halas Hall are as high as they've been in years.
Now...
Can we please fast-forward to Week 1?
Because I am READY.
...And somebody check on Coby Bryant, man.
DAMMIT.
By Chicago. For Chicago.
